Tehachapi Heritage League awards a scholarship each year to a Tehachapi High School graduating senior. The recipient is chosen on the basis of scholarship, service to the community, and plans for continuing success. This year there were two students who more than fulfilled these goals. It was possible to award a second scholarship because of donations in recognition of the 90th birthday of Bob Reynolds.
James Bogursky was awarded a $500 scholarship for many reasons. He has not only achieved a grade point average over 4.0 at Tehachapi High School, but he has been attending Cerro Coso College at the same time. His interest in mathematics inspired him to study calculus and trigonometry at the college level. He plans to eventually earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. This is the background he needs as he follows his passion for engineering.
He has a great interest in history and has served as a docent at Tehachapi Museum and Errea House for the past four years. Judy Reynolds, the THL docent coordinator said, āJames is the best volunteer we have ever had. Investing in him is investing in the future of our country.ā
Kiya Richard-Hammond received the $500 Bob Reynolds Scholarship because of her scholastic achievement and leadership skills. She was highly recommended by several of her teachers who described her as an incredible young woman with maturity beyond her years. While maintaining over a 4.0 grade average in high school, she also attended classes at Cerro Coso.
Richard-Hammond believes it is important to learn about the past and the people who shaped our town and country. She is especially interested in the early people of the Tehachapi area. She said her personal experience with the Kawaiisu has had an impact on her appreciation for resilience and adaptability, which are essential in life.
Tehachapi Heritage League is accepting new and renewing members at this time. They always appreciate donations to maintain and improve museum facilities and activities. Call Dixie at 661-599-1889 for more information.
