PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Three college-bound seniors will get a little leg up in college tuition costs from the Calvert County Employee Recognition Committee (ERC). The ERC awarded three scholarships to students with connections to county employees. The awards were presented at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on June 3.
The application opened at the end of 2024 and was open to students whose parents or guardians worked for Calvert County, or students who themselves work or worked for the government.
The scholarship application opened in late 2024. Committee members removed all identifying information from the applications and used a points system to ensure maximum fairness. Applications were evaluated on academic achievement, extracurriculars in and out of school, community service, honors and awards, letters of recommendation, and a short essay. This year’s essay asked students to write about a time they failed and what they learned from it.
The 2025 winners are:
First Prize for Graduating Seniors With Parents or Guardians Who Are Employees of Calvert County: Alexa Yingling, daughter of Julie Yingling in the Office of Communications and Media Relations. She will graduate from St. Mary’s Ryken High School with a GPA of 3.961 and plans to attend St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Her award is $1,500.
Second Prize for Graduating Seniors With Parents or Guardians Who Are Employees of Calvert County: Ivan Sypa, son of John Sypa, fleet maintenance division chief. He will graduate from Patuxent High School with a GPA of 3.63 and plans to attend Allegany College of Maryland. His award is $750.
Prize for Graduating Seniors Employed by Calvert Government: Lindsay Post, a lifeguard with Parks and Recreation, will graduate from Huntingtown High with a GPA of 3.82 and plans to attend Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
The scholarship is funded by vending machine sales on all county government properties, and as noted by committee chairperson Ashley Wilkerson, “It’s amazing that just one snack can help send a student to college.”
Congratulations and good luck to all the winners.
