FAIRMONT — Three graduating high school seniors recently received assistance with their upcoming college tuition from the Morgantown Sons & Daughters of Italy.
The Colombo F. Bandiera Scholarship awarded $1,200 each to Sophia DeMary and Hoyt Michael, both of East Fairmont High and Gianna Koski of Fairmont Senior. The scholarship honors the late Fr. Colombo F. Bandiera who passed away in February 2017 at the age of 91 after serving the Catholic Church practically his whole life.
In his six decades of religious service, Bandiera he served as associate pastor at St. Joseph Cathedral from 1953-55 and was the pastor of St. John Catholic Church in Clarksburg, from 1955-69, where he also helped oversee the operation of Notre Dame High. From 1969-1975, he served as pastor of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Morgantown, but served his longest tenure as pastor at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Fairmont, from 1979-94.

Applicants attend Morgantown, University, Preston Co., Fairmont Senior, East Fairmont, North Marion, Clay-Battelle, or Trinity to be eligible for the scholarship along with having an Italian heritage.
Students were also required to write a one-page, biographical essay highlighting their Italian heritage, that explained traditions within their family and how Italian culture has influenced their lives. They are also asked to share their aspirations, goals and ambitions for the future and explain the various forms of community outreach and community service they have done.
DeMary plans to attend Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. where she will major in engineering science and minor in biology.
“The Sons and Daughters of Italy Colombo F. Bandiera Scholarship will tremendously help me to further obtain my education at a top tier college, in addition to engaging in my community and expanding my knowledge of engineering,” DeMary said in an email. “It will allow me to combine the innovative skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve health care, from diagnostics to treatment.”
Demary said being named a scholarship recipient “was an immense honor” as Bandiera served as celebrant for her grandparents’ wedding in 1963.
“The first thing I thought when I found out I won is how pertinent Italian Family traditions are,” DeMary said. “One of the important traditions within my family is my family. As I start into adulthood, it is ingrained in me to stay close to my immediate and extended family.”
Michael, who plans to attend Fairmont State University in the fall, said he will use the scholarship funds to fill a need.
“Well, it’s going to help me get a computer for college, which is very much needed,” Michael said.
