Robin Hall, co-founder of Town Hall Outdoor Co., couldn’t hide her excitement Monday as she talked about the Steamboat Springs-based company awarding eight scholarships to Camp Coletrain Music Workshops at this year’s WinterWonderGrass event.
“I think the big thing about (Town Hall) is our community,” Hall said. “We just love giving back and partnering with folks like Integrated Community, SOS Outreach and Boys and Girls Club and enjoy giving our time and energy at events.”
“We did ski-free Sunday yesterday, we’re doing an event over Winter Carnival and are getting out and about, spreading not only love and high-fives, but trying to get kids outfitted in great gear,” added Hall.
This year Town Hall will expand its effort at the WinterWonderGrass festival, set for Feb. 28-March 2, by donating eight full scholarships to make music education more accessible.
“It was really neat,” Hall said of the partnership she has built with WinterWonderGrass. “Scotty from Bonfire Entertainment reached out in 2021 and said, ‘Love what Town Hall does for the community.’ I said likewise, and that I love everything that WonderGrass does for the community. It’s just such a great, passionate bunch, and the partnership was a natural connection.”
That connection led Hall to partner with WinterWonderGrass organizers, Bonfire Entertainment and founder and CEO Scotty Stoughton. This year marks the fourth time Town Hall has been involved with the Steamboat Springs bluegrass and roots music festival since the company was founded five years ago. Town Hall makes children’s outdoor apparel and adult puffer jackets.
For the past four years, Town Hall has worked with WinterWonderGrass as the official kids apparel brand.
Town Hall also helps sponsor the kids tent inside WinterWonderGrass that offers arts and crafts, face painting and a raffle for Town Hall jackets.
The two-day immersive music workshop will be led by professional musicians Coleman Smith of Yonder Mountain String Band, Casey Houlihan of Trout Steak Revival and Kay McKenzie of Little Moon Travelers and Deer Creek Sharp Shooters. The Camp Coletrain workshop is open to beginner-to-intermediate children, ages 6-12, with instruction offered for guitar, mandolin, fiddle and ukulele players. There is also an adult instruction session offered for teens and adults.
The Coletrain Music Academy, which runs Camp Coletrain, has run “public pick” in the past where ticket-holders who are musicians have been invited to jam with some of the artists performing at WinterWonderGrass. This year, for the first time, the Coletrain Music Academy will also offer the workshops for those looking for a more immersive experience.
Hall said she is excited that the Steamboat Springs community has a chance to be a part of the energy that WinterWonderGrass and Coletrain Music Academy bring to town and she is looking forward to offering the opportunity to young musicians.
The scholarships offered by Town Hall will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis using the discount code “STEAMBOATKIDS” at ColeTrainMusicAcademy.com. The first eight students (ages 6-12) to register for the Kids Music Workshop can use the discount code to receive 100% off their ticket price.
“We’re still doing the public pick, and that is open to any ticket holder that wants to come,” said Robin Vega, a partner with the Coletrain Music Academy. “You don’t have to purchase a workshop pass, but the workshop is just an add-on this year for anyone that wants to learn.”
