This Year, 27 Townsend residents are receiving scholarships totaling $42,800 to help meet college or trade school costs, courtesy of the Hearts and Hands Scholarship Fund.
“This is our 30th anniversary,” says Sandy Headrick, President of the Fund. “It’s amazing to think that we started off with two $225 scholarships in 1995, using the proceeds from a couple of yard sales, and now we’re able to help our local students with $1600 scholarships. All with the help of our community through their generous donations.”
Nine of the recipients attended a celebration of their awards at the Hearts and Hands Scholarship Fund Thrift Shoppe in Townsend, TN on July 1. The students received the first half of their $1,600 scholarship intended to help with expenses during their Fall semesters. Those unable to attend received their checks in the mail.
Scholarship recipients must be Townsend residents and attend accredited schools, which includes college, trade school and graduate school. All applicants who meet these requirements will receive scholarships, regardless of financial need. The application can be found at
www.heartsandhandsfund.org. Part-time students can also apply and will receive a prorated amount depending on their schedule.
In its 30 years of operation, the Hearts and Hands Scholarship Fund has awarded $438,850 to 210 students. Heart and Hands Scholarship Fund is staffed entirely by volunteers. All donations and profits from the Thrift Shoppe go to scholarships or its endowment fund.
Anyone interested in donating to the nonprofit may use the Donate button on the website or mail a check to PO Box 334, Townsend, TN 37882. Another way to support the Fund is to stop by the Hearts and Hands Thrift Shoppe in Townsend to shop or donate.
