George Washington University’s Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration (TSPPPA), in partnership with the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), launched a new graduate-level scholarship endowment that reflects a dedication to environmental sustainability and seeking solutions to crises such as climate change.
Established by an anonymous benefactor in EESI’s name, the new endowment will support TSPPPA graduate students and reflect EESI’s mission and vision for a sustainable, resilient and equitable world. An independent nonprofit, EESI is dedicated to advancing science-based solutions for climate change, energy and environmental challenges.
“I am extremely appreciative of being given the opportunity to participate in this excellent program,” said Amelia Lindsay-Kaufman, the inaugural recipient of the new Environmental and Energy Study Institute Graduate Fellowship and an environmental policy student at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. “I believe that policy decisions made now and in the near future will be critically important for minimizing environmental devastation, and I am eager to contribute to this work.”
Lindsay-Kaufman credited TSPPPA with propelling her transition from a career in academic research in the earth sciences to her current focus on environmental science policy. “I was excited about the multidisciplinary curriculum and the fact that the coursework could be customized to focus on a particular specialty,” she said.
TSPPPA Director Mary Tschirhart said the scholarship will help foster the next generation of environmental scholars who will play vital roles in shaping future climate science and policy. “We are grateful for the EESI Graduate Fellowship, which will help us attract and develop the type of talent we need in the environmental policy space,” Tschirhart said.
EESI President Daniel Bresette noted that the partnership draws on both institutions’ educational foundations and will help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to turn climate, energy and environmental challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. “Thanks to the generosity of our benefactor, our collaboration with George Washington University will ensure that excellent educational opportunities are available to our most promising students in the heart of the nation’s capital,” he said.
