The Trans Canada Trail has awarded a $3,750 grant to three Yukon communities to support trail maintenance and volunteer initiatives, with additional funding allocated to a signature event in Carmacks.
Each of the three projects, Dawson City Trails, Carmacks Boardwalk and Whitehorse Copper Trail, received a $1,250 trail care grant. The funding supported cleanup efforts, minor repairs and volunteer appreciation events, said Trans Canada Trail spokesperson Justin Fauteux.
The Carmacks Boardwalk was selected as one of 13 signature events for International Trails Day held on the first Saturday of June, earning an additional $1,000. The extra funding will support the community barbecue and a trail cleanup event on Saturday, June 7, Fauteux said.
The City of Dawson used its grant for a trail cleanup day with volunteer appreciation, while the Klondike Snowmobile Association completed brush clearing, sign replacements and trash pickup along the Whitehorse Copper Trail.
The Trans Canada Trail, spanning 29,000 kilometres, connects communities across Canada and plays a role in Canada’s national outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship programs. In the Yukon, sections of the trail include historic routes such as the Klondike Highway and Dempster Highway.
This funding is part of a broader Trail Care and International Trails Day program, with additional Yukon-based projects expected to receive support. The Yukon government has also invested in trail infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to the Pine Lake Trail in Haines Junction.
The Yukon government has submitted a proposal to the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) for planned developments at Pine Lake Campground. As of April 22, the proposal remains under review, according to the YESAB registry.
