TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — Travis County is launching a new child care program called Raising Travis County.
On Tuesday, commissioners approved $21 million in funding to create another 1,000 child care scholarships for families. The money comes from a child care initiative voters approved last year.
Officials say this will help children and parents in Travis County.
“Today’s finalization of these contracts is about more than child care; it’s about long-term economic resilience,” said Yael Lawson, interim CEO of Workforce Solutions Capital Area. “When parents can work and kids get the strong start they deserve, we all win.”
The money will also provide gap funding for child care providers. Often, state scholarship amounts don’t cover the true cost of providing care.
“Today, Raising Travis County takes a huge step forward for children in our community,” said Travis County Judge Andy Brown. “Every dollar we invest in child care today will lead to better outcomes and brighter futures for kids tomorrow. Our partnership with Workforce Solutions will expand access to childcare scholarships, critical for lowering costs and reducing the monthslong waitlist for care.”
Families should start seeing new child care slots available in January.
The program also includes an advisory council made up of parents, youth providers and policy experts.
