Every year, Travis Elementary students raise money to fund a scholarship for a San Marcos High School senior who had previously attended Travis. This year Adiyana Govea was the recipient of the scholarship. The students raised $750, which the Rotary Club of San Marcos matched for a total scholarship of $1,500.
Travis students conduct a penny drive, bringing in coins over a three-week period. There is a competition between classes. This year, the reward was 25 water balloons for every $25 raised by a class. The young scholars could then throw the water balloons at the school’s Principal Scott Masini and Assistant Principal Connie Blanda at a special event.
Rotary serves as sponsor of a program at Travis called Early Act, which promotes teamwork, leadership and community service. The scholarship is one of the student service projects.
