Trevecca currently offers 24 graduate programs and officials are working to be sure undergraduate students are aware of graduate school options at Trevecca and how to fund them after graduation.
For in-state students, the Tennessee Hope Scholarship can now be used for 5 years, meaning it can help cover the cost of several Trevecca graduate programs as many of them are 12-15 months long. The scholarship provides $5,700 for full time students.
Additionally, Trevecca’s Graduate Alumni Scholarship offers eligible alumni a 10% tuition discount to programs except the Physician Assistant and Doctor of Pharmacy programs.
“Combining [Hope Scholarship] with Trevecca’s 10% alumni scholarship that we offer for most of our programs, sometimes students can get 50% off or even more depending on what program that they are looking for,” said Michael Newland, associate vice president of graduate enrollment.
Newland and his team have also worked to increase awareness of the university’s graduate offerings across campus.
A 2022 survey conducted by a marketing research class on campus, in collaboration with the graduate enrollment office, found that 74% of students knew about the graduate programs available.
However, after implementing initiatives such as graduate school fairs and bringing guest speakers into senior-level undergraduate classes, a follow-up survey in fall 2023 found that 97% of students were now aware of the graduate programs available.
Newland said one main benefit of a graduate program at Trevecca is the connection with faculty and peers that leads to networking opportunities later.
“Students are securing positions in a variety of ways. A lot of the time, the relationship between faculty and students is beneficial because a lot of the faculty that teach in our master’s level programs are practitioners in their fields,” said Newland.
This spring, the first cohort of Trevecca’s Master of Science in Human Performance and Fitness degree will graduate.
According to Program Director Aaron Hall, the program is experiencing success because of its focus on training effectively and running successful fitness businesses.
“We have multiple students that are currently developing and opening their own businesses, either online training or opening a gym,” said Hall.
This online program is unique from other universities because all faculty members are practicing licensed clinicians who bring real-world expertise to the classroom, he said.
“Each faculty member that teaches within our program is a practicing licensed clinician. We have faulty that are physical therapists, strength coaches, registered dieticians, and we have our entrepreneurship track that is taught out of the MBA program,” said Hall.
For Naomi Akinbade, a master of public health graduate student at Trevecca, working on campus as a graduate assistant in the center for leadership and call service is helping her navigate her career decisions.
She credits her success to the guidance and mentorship of faculty members Dr. Nykolaus Reid, professor of biology; Alisha Russell, associate professor of biology; and especially Michelle Gaertner, associate dean of student success, who have been instrumental in her journey.
“I feel like I am learning so much from Michelle Gaertner, and I want to show up as a leader in the future,” said Akinbade.
