WEST POINT, Ala. – Trey Campbell was a person who experienced a lot of loss in his life but still managed to live every day to the fullest. At age 10, Campbell was diagnosed with a heart condition called cardiomyopathy, which prevented him from playing sports, and he was no longer considered “normal.” With all of his continuing losses, it affected almost everything he was allowed to do. But even though this diagnosis brought many challenges, he never let it stop him.
While facing medical and emotional challenges during adulthood, he found comfort in his friends and family and his relationship with God. Despite his obstacles and challenges, he never stopped working to be the best version of himself. Sadly, Campbell passed away in March 2021. Afterward, his wife Jordan said, she felt called to give back to the community that cared for her and her family during their darkest times.
In May 2021, the Campbell family was able to donate scholarships to three West Point High School seniors who had also dealt with similar situations of grief. The students were grateful and told the Campbells how much their generosity helped their college journey. That would be the start of an organization with an amazing mission. Inspired by Campbell’s love of cornhole, his family partnered with the Cullman County Cornhole Association to begin an annual fundraiser.
This year the family hosted the fourth annual Trey Campbell Memorial Scholarship Benefit Cornhole Tournament to raise scholarships for WPHS seniors and other projects throughout the year. Since the beginning, the event has hosted more than 130 cornhole teams and received sponsorships from local businesses and individuals who have become lane sponsors, donating time, money and effort to support the event in every way possible.
The annual cornhole tournament and TC Memorial Inc. have given away over 14 scholarships ranging from $500-$1,000. In addition to the scholarships, TC Memorial Inc. partnered with another organization to organize and give away over 50 school backpacks filled with school supplies in 2023. In 2024, they donated 38 filled packs to Harmony School.
Said Jordan Campbell, “Our goal is to not only provide this scholarship through to the West Point community, but to continue to grow and help our students that have a need throughout Cullman County.”
