TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Visit Tri-Cities announced the winners of the inaugural IM TRI Scholarship Program, awarding two local athletes comprehensive training and support to compete in Ironman Tri-Cities on September 21, 2025.
Michael McKinney and Maricela Vargas were selected from a competitive pool of applicants, Visit Tri-Cities said in a release.
“These scholarships represent our commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering personal growth and opportunity through endurance sports,” Kevin Lewis, President and CEO of Visit Tri-Cities, said.
McKinney, who found sobriety in 2016, views this opportunity as a continuation of his personal transformation.
“This challenge represents everything I’ve worked toward,” McKinney said.
Vargas, who recently completed her first marathon, is eager to push her boundaries.
“I’m ready to confront my biggest fear of swimming in open water and discover what else I can overcome,” Vargas stated.
