The family of Mary Joy Moosman presented the inaugural Mary Joy Moosman Foundation scholarships at Troup High School on Tuesday, nearly one year after the tragic car accident that took her life.
In a statement from the organization, the family said, “This year’s recipients exemplify the spirit, dedication, and character that Mary Joy was known for.”
There were three scholarships given; one based on academics, a cheer scholarship and a soccer scholarship for students involved in the extracurriculars. Moosman was a star student, played on the Varsity soccer team and did competitive cheer for the Tigers.
Raygen Godfrey received the academic scholarship, Kaitlynn Anthony was awarded the cheer scholarship, and Ephrem Davidson was honored with the soccer scholarship. Each student will receive $1,500 to support their college education. Godfrey and Anthony are both heading to the University of Georgia in the Fall and Davidson will be attending Auburn University.
“The scholarships were created to celebrate Mary Joy’s legacy and passions, and to inspire others to pursue excellence in academics, athletics, and leadership,” the statement read.
The foundation has two upcoming community fundraising events to help raise scholarship funds for years to come: the Joy Ride on June 19 and MJ’s Lemonade Stand on July 26. Sign-up information and event details can be found at http://lovelikemaryjoy.com.
The organization is expanding the reach of the scholarships next year. There will still be three scholarships but it will be open to students at all the Troup County High Schools: Troup, LaGrange, and Callaway High Schools.
