TUCKAHOE – The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants Association held its annual scholarship awards presentation on Tuesday, July 12 at L’s Restaurant on Route 50. There were fourteen applicants and a total of $18,000 in scholarships awarded.
While there were six high school graduates who received scholarships, the Association decided to create a program to also award students enrolled in college to help them continue their education. An additional eight students who met the criteria to receive scholarship monies, including maintaining a 3.0 GPA in college, were rewarded.
The GTAMA works year-round to raise money for the scholarship program. Proceeds from the Tour-de-Tuckahoe Bike Ride, Christmas in the Country Fundraiser and the Town Dances all help fund the program, as does the upcoming Canoe and Kayak Races on Sunday, Aug. 7. This year the Association is adding an Eco-Tour beginning at 9:30 a.m. The other races start at 11 a.m.
Additionally, the estate of Doris C. Stowell established a scholarship award as did the May Family.
To date the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchant’s Association has awarded a total of $76,000 to area students.
