Applications for Eligible SUNY and CUNY Students accepted through February 2, 2025

Students, spring forward.

Though current temperatures are frigid, spring is top of mind for full-time students priming for the new academic semester in New York at a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year college or university.

The Excelsior Scholarship application, which allows eligible full-time students to attend SUNY or CUNY tuition-free, has officially opened.

As announced by New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) President Dr. Guillermo Linares and Governor Kathy Hochul, the application will remain open until February 2^nd.

Applicants must meet eligibility requirements, including but not limited to the following criteria:

• Have an adjusted combined federal household income of $125,000 or less
• Be entering college in the spring 2025 term
• Plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year college full-time
• Agree to live in New York State and not be employed out of state for a duration equal to the number of years you received the scholarship

HESC assists more than 300,000 students each year by providing more than $800 million in grants, scholarships, and loan forgiveness benefit.

“I want to thank Governor Hochul for recognizing the importance of investing in higher education and its role in shaping the future of our state,” said HESC President Dr. Guillermo Linares. “Her commitment to ensuring that every student has a fair shot at an affordable education is transforming lives and creating opportunities.”

Students eligible for federal aid must complete the FAFSA and New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) applications or apply through the Senator José Peralta New York State DREAM Act application. The TAP application can be accessed through the New York State Aid link at the end of the FAFSA (https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa). Students who already submitted their FAFSA and missed the link can apply at https://www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw.

“There is a place at SUNY for every New Yorker, and we are committed to delivering an exceptional educational experience at an affordable price,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. “With the invaluable support of the Excelsior Scholarship, New York State’s Tuition Assistance Program, and other financial aid, 52% of in-state SUNY students attend one of our 64 institutions completely tuition-free.”

The Excelsior Scholarship was launched in 2017 and is intended to assist families and students defray the costs of higher education.

“As part of our efforts to help current and prospective students access financial aid by completing their FAFSA and TAP applications, we are also encouraging eligible students to apply for robust New York State opportunities like the Excelsior Scholarship, which has already enabled thousands of CUNY students to attend college tuition-free and provided a pathway for them to pursue and achieve their dreams,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez.

Oficialmente, está abierta la convocatoria para solicitar la Beca Excelsior, que permite a los estudiantes de tiempo completo matricularse gratuitamente en SUNY o CUNY.

Tal y como anunciaron el presidente de la Corporación de Servicios de Educación Superior del estado de Nueva York (HESC, por sus siglas en inglés), el Dr. Guillermo Linares, y la gobernadora Kathy Hochul, el plazo de solicitud permanecerá abierto hasta el 2 de febrero.

Los solicitantes deben cumplir los requisitos de elegibilidad, que incluyen, entre otros, los siguientes criterios:

• Tener un ingreso familiar federal total ajustado igual o inferior a $125,000 dólares
• Ingresar en la universidad en la primavera de 2025
• Planea asistir a una universidad SUNY o CUNY de dos o cuatro años cómo estudiante de tiempo completo
• Comprometerse a residir en el estado de Nueva York y a no trabajar fuera del estado durante un período igual al número de años de los que disfrute de la beca

HESC ayuda a más de 300,000 estudiantes cada año proporcionando más de $800 millones de dólares en subvenciones, becas y beneficios de condonación de préstamos.
