The late Heather Bailey, whose family established the scholarship fund in her memory.
BRISTOL – The Heather Bailey Memorial Scholarship fund has awarded twelve, $1,000 scholarships to graduating Bristol seniors this year and helped more than 40 eighth graders go on their class trip.
The fund was established in memory of Heather Bailey, who was a Northeast Middle School student.
Bailey was 14 when she died on March 30, 2000, before her eighth grade class trip. She died suddenly due to complications from lifelong health ailments. After her death, members of her family and her friends wanted to honor and remember her life in a positive way.
In August 2000, they held the first Heather Bailey Memorial Softball Tournament to raise money to establish the scholarship fund.
According to the fund’s mission statement, “recipients of this award demonstrate hard working habits throughout their school years and a zest for life as Heather had.”
In 2001, Bailey’s family held a second softball tournament and the First Annual Heather Bailey/Reed & Stefanow Golf Tournament in October. Fundraising has continued through the golf tournament.
Lori Koczur, Bailey’s aunt, said members of her family have been fundraising ever since to keep her memory alive.
Bailey was the daughter of Roxanne and Michael Pierce of Bristol.
“We have been awarding scholarships, sending 8th graders on their class trip and donating to other causes in our community,” Koczur said.
This year, Koczur said scholarships have been awarded to the following Bristol seniors:
– Kyleigh Sutula, Bristol Eastern High School
– Haydee Santacroce, Bristol Eastern High School
– Alexander Corvo, Bristol Eastern High School
– Scarlett Fulton, Bristol Eastern High School
– Sandra Lobeski, Bristol Central High School
– Grace Higgins, Bristol Central High School
– Landon Sisson, Bristol Central High School
– Austin Richman, Bristol Central High School
– Carissa Boutot, Bristol Central High School
– Lincoln Archibald, Bristol Central High School
– Callie Lodovico, Bristol Central High School
– Jacob Krzynowek, St. Paul Catholic High School.
