Two Belton ISD students have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Seniors Steven Melo Arantes and David Shelburne, both students at Belton High School, earned the recognition after submitting applications with information about their academic records, school and community activities, leadership characteristics and awards won, according to a district press release.
They were previously named semifinalists for their scores on the Preliminary SAT test that was taken in their junior year — an examination they placed in the top 1% among more than 1.5 million students nationwide.
“Steven Melo Arantes and David Shelburne exemplify the academic excellence we strive for in Belton ISD,” Belton ISD Superintendent Malinda Golden said in a news release. “Their hard work and dedication are truly commendable, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with them.”
Belton High School Principal Claudia Knox shared that sentiment and highlighted how Arantes and Shelburne are exemplary student leaders.
“Their achievement shows that involvement in extracurriculars and academic excellence go hand in hand,” she said. “With resources like Tiger Time tutoring, study groups, and clubs, our staff supports students in reaching their full potential.”
Arantes was excited his name was among the few selected across the country for the honor.

“Being named a National Merit Finalist is truly rewarding,” he said. “The process — from preparing for the PSAT to writing college essays — was challenging but helped me grow. My advice to younger students is to start early, stay consistent, and apply yourself in every class.”
Shelburne reflected on his countless hours of studying, especially over the summer, to prepare for the PSAT.

“It feels great to see my hard work pay off,” said Shelburne. “My family has been incredibly supportive, and this recognition opens doors to scholarship opportunities.”
Although 15,000 high school students nationwide were named a finalist in 2025, only 7,500 will win a scholarship from the program — of which there are three types that can be awarded from March to mid-June: National Merit Scholarship awards, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.
