BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Two local high-school seniors in Illinois received a scholarship from a subset of the Illinois High School Association.
The Illinois High School Activities Foundation (IHSAF) gifted Amayah Doyle, of Carterville High School, and Isaac Walters, of Gallatin County High School, $1,000 each. The pair is part of 14 seniors selected for the foundation’s second round of scholarship recipients.
Seniors at IHSA schools were eligible for the award if they plan to major in education, plan to work in the coaching field after high school or possess a license and are hired as an IHSA official.
“The goal of the IHSAF is to support the mission of the IHSA, and that mission cannot be achieved without the next generation of educators, coaches, and officials,” said the Superintendent of District 230 and President of the IHSAF Board of Directors Dr. Robert Nolting. “We are incredibly proud to be able to present scholarships to these 14 deserving young people who will positively impact high school students in the near future, as well as those already making a difference as licensed IHSA officials.”
The IHSAF accepted donations throughout 2024 to fund portions of the scholarships. The rest of the money for the awards came from the family of Ron McGraw and Mike Nissen. McGraw passed away in 2023 after a career in education and time spent as an IHSA administrator. Nissen, meanwhile, is retired from his career in high school education and golf. Nissen helped coach every IHSA Boys State Final Tournament dating back to 1965.
All 14 scholarship recipients submitted videos discussing the importance of high school activities to their lives and future career goals.
