BELTON — Two Lake Belton High School seniors joined the 1% of high schoolers nationwide named 2025 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, Belton Independent School District officials announced Monday.
Dhruv Bhat and Alex Yuen earned the distinction and the opportunity to advance in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million, according to a news release.
“Dhruv and Alex are exceptional examples of the dedication, perseverance and curiosity we see in our students,” Lake Belton High School Principal Steele Hantgin said in a new release. “We are proud of their accomplishments and excited to see the opportunities that await them as they move forward in the National Merit competition and in life.”
Bhat plays tennis and is involved in University Interscholastic League academics, National Honor Society, student council and Health Occupations Students of America.
“I put the work in, but I hadn’t really had that reward yet,” Bhat said. “This was the first reward.”
Yuen is active in University Interscholastic League academics, National Honor Society, student council and Health Occupations Students of America. He said he plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to pursue a premedical path and hopes to become an ophthalmologist, according to a news release.
More than 1,000 Texas students were named 2025 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
