Goldwater Scholarships, among the most prestigious awards for undergraduate students pursuing STEM degrees, are going to two juniors at NJIT.
The recipients are: Dev Doshi, a biomedical engineering major in the Newark College of Engineering; and Brock Shahinian, an environmental science major in the Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts.
The NJIT Goldwater Scholars represent two of 11 statewide, and 441 total across the United States. They were selected from an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors nominated by 445 academic institutions. This is the seventh consecutive year NJIT students have earned the national honor.
John Carpinelli, professor of electrical and computing engineering, and a campus representative for the Goldwater Scholarship Program, said the scholarship demonstrates the caliber of NJIT’s undergraduate student body.
“NJIT undergraduates continue to rise to the top in prestigious award programs, like the Goldwater Scholarship. The selection of Dev and Brock from a nationwide field of exceptional students reinforces the strength and promise of our STEM programs — and a bright future for our awardees,” said Carpinelli.
Here is a look at each of the recipients:
Doshi is a junior majoring in biomedical engineering and member of the Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC), and has already been conditionally accepted into the B.S./M.D. program at New Jersey Medical School. He intends to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. with a focus on neuroscience. He has undertaken a number of research projects at several sites, including New Jersey Medical School and Columbia University. He serves as an EMT and is active in several groups, both on and off campus.
Shahinian is a junior environmental science major, and member of the ADHC. Shahinian has a perfect 4.0 GPA and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in ecology focusing on the impact of human disturbances on ecological interactions. Shahinian has participated in research projects at NJIT, as well as REU programs at NJIT and Cornell University. Outside of research and coursework, Shahinian serves as vice president of NJIT’s AAEES Chapter, is an honors ambassador for the Honors College, and a band leader in the Society of Musical Arts at NJIT.
The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. With the 2025 awards, the Goldwater Foundation has awarded 11,162 scholarships since 1989, the first year the scholarship was bestowed.
Look out for a full profile of these students and their research later in the spring.
