Two Philomath High School graduates are among 10 students in the region who will receive $2,500 college scholarships from Oregon State Credit Union to support their higher education goals.
Janice Hellesto and Colton Hruska, both recent PHS graduates, were selected for the credit union’s Tomorrow’s Leaders Today scholarships based on their academic achievements, community involvement, extracurricular activities and work experiences.
Hellesto will attend George Fox University this fall while Hruska plans to enroll at Oregon State University.
The scholarships are available annually to credit union members with teen checking accounts who are graduating from high school and planning to attend a two- or four-year Oregon college or university. This year’s 10 winners demonstrated academic success while also participating in sports, leading school clubs, working various jobs and volunteering with churches, food pantries, summer camps, animal rescue organizations and other community groups.
“These exceptional students have contributed to their schools and communities, while learning good spending habits with their teen checking accounts,” Gary Schuette II, Oregon State Credit Union president and CEO, said in a press release. “We are proud to help them take the next step in their education.”
Other scholarship recipients include Emma Anderson of West Salem High School (attending Chemeketa Community College), Ariel Cooper of Falls City High School (attending Western Oregon University), Ella Gilder of West Albany High School (attending George Fox University), Quinten Layton of Newport High School (attending Chemeketa Community College), Andrew Louie of Corvallis High School (attending Oregon State University), Emma Moore of Dallas High School (attending Chemeketa Community College), Shaylyn Noble of Alsea Charter School (attending Eastern Oregon University) and William Postlewait of Newport High School (attending Oregon State University Honors College).
