Shelter hosts adoption event
Applications are open for two scholarships from the Danville Area Humane Society.
Both were started in 2019 in a partnership with two families.
The first award is named for Margot Mayhew, of Gretna, and was created by her grandson, Bobby Allen Roach.
Roach wanted a way to honor her grandmother during her final stages of glioblastoma brain cancer. She died on May 2, 2019.
The $500 Margot Richter Mayhew Scholarship for Professional Studies is funded from donations from the family and will be awarded to a Pittsylvania County student who plans to pursue a career helping animals, according to a news release.
Primary consideration will be given to a student who will study at a college or university in the Dan River Region.
A second scholarship is for a student living in Danville. This was created in memory of Barbara S. Smith in 2019.
Known as the Barbara S. Smith Scholarship for Animal Welfare Studies fund, it was established by the daughter of Smith, Hilary Wyatt, who worked for the humane society for a few years and has served on the board for several years, the release explained.
The two families hope students pursuing careers in veterinary science, animal welfare or conservation will apply for the scholarships.
Scholarship application forms can be requested via e-mail at dahsinc@yahoo.com or may be picked up at the animal shelter. The deadline for submissions is May 1.
