The United States Submarine Veterans, Charleston Base, presented two scholarships through its Admiral James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship Fund. The awards were presented by the Scholarship Committee (Carl Chinn, chair, and Marty Sessler) at its June 13 regular meeting. Scholarship recipients were awarded $5,000 each.
Recipient Reagan Peppler is the granddaughter of Johnny and Susan Brown and daughter of Jennifer Peppler and Colin Wieringa. Peppler is a graduate of Cane Bay High School in Summerville. She played volleyball (captain), was in the band, sang in the choir and served on student council, serving as vice president and treasurer. She was also inducted into the National Honor Society.
Peppler was accepted to Trident Technical College and the University of South Carolina. She will attend Trident Tech for two years and then transfer to the University of South Carolina, where she will major in hospitality.
Recipient Elizabeth Chinn of Simpsonville is the granddaughter of Carl and Connie Chinn and daughter of Cory and Hollie Chinn. She graduated from Greenville Technical Charter High School in Greenville. This dual-enrollment school allows students to earn college credits. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and was on the Greenville Technical College dean’s list.
She earned 40 credit hours in high school from Greenville Tech, which will transfer to college. She will attend Clemson, where she will major in elementary education.
The Admiral James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship is funded by the Charleston Base of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. through donations and fundraising activities. The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors and disbursed as a one-time minimum $500 award payable to the recipient.
