Each year, University of Canterbury selects three deserving candidates from its MBA programme at Te Kura Umanga | UC Business School to receive scholarships.
The University of Canterbury (UC) has renewed its longstanding partnership with the Gough Family Foundation, extending the Gough Family Foundation MBA Leaders Scholarship for another four years, until 2030. Ben Gough, founder of the Gough Family Foundation, highlighted the importance of this partnership in strengthening leadership across both commercial and community sectors.
“By leveraging the strengths and networks of UC and the Gough Family Foundation, scholars have gained learning opportunities at some of the world’s most prestigious universities and access to top business leaders in New Zealand,” Gough said. “This opportunity positively influences their personal and professional lives and encourages them to give back to their communities, which is a key attribute we seek in applicants.”
The revised programme now aligns more closely with the shared vision of UC and the Gough Family Foundation. Feedback from past scholars has played a key role in shaping these reforms.
Since its launch in 2021, the Gough Family Foundation MBA Leaders Scholarship has supported outstanding candidates in developing leadership skills, advancing their professional and personal growth, and making a meaningful impact on businesses and communities. Through this initiative, UC and the Gough Family Foundation equip scholars with the tools to transform their visionary ideas into reality, delivering lasting benefits to individuals, organisations, and society.
The scholarship offers broader international opportunities, equipping scholars with a global perspective on leadership and innovation. Participants will collaborate with prestigious institutions such as Stanford University in the United States and Aalto University in Finland. Scholars can take courses like Stanford’s renowned Design Thinking paper, fostering international networks, knowledge exchange, and leadership development. This aligns with the scholarship’s mission of “taking the best of Waitaha Canterbury to the world and bringing the best of the world to Aotearoa New Zealand.”
A key feature of the programme is the bespoke Courage in Leadership course, delivered in partnership with Outward Bound. Based on past scholars’ experiences, this experiential course combines practical challenges with reflective learning, creating a transformative leadership journey.
