AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron received a $1.2 million award from the state for Choose Ohio First Scholarships.
The university will use the award to provide scholarships to incoming students majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical fields.
The Choose Ohio First program started 15 years ago to provide scholarships and essential resources to support their students’ success while pursuing their education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. The university has been offering undergraduate students Choose Ohio First scholarships since 2009. Last year, the university also made the scholarships available to students in applicable graduate degree programs, according to a news release.
“The FY 25 award of $1,199,800 for the Choose Ohio First program is a transformative investment in our students and our state,” Vice Provost for Student Pathways and Dean of the Williams Honors College Fedearia Nicholson-Sweval said in the release. “By providing crucial scholarship support to students entering science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical fields, the University of Akron is paving the way for a more innovative future. This program not only helps students achieve academic and career success but also strengthens Ohio’s economy by retaining top talent within the state.”
The Choose Ohio First program aims to increase underrepresented groups in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical fields. The program seeks to recruit students from diverse backgrounds, according to the release.
“Our program is dedicated to broadening access to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical education, and we are thrilled to offer even more scholarship opportunities to students eager to pursue these fields,” Director of the Office of Academic and Retention Support Jasmina Waters said in the release. “Students should apply for our scholarships once they are admitted to the University of Akron and join a community committed to innovation and growth.”
To help bolster student success, the university offers incoming Choose Ohio First students a Summer Bridge Program to help them get acclimated to the university the summer before their first semester. The program features courses for credit and tutoring and mentorship opportunities, according to the university.
