MOSCOW – At this year’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, four talented young musicians were awarded scholarships by the Avista Foundation for their outstanding performances, including a student from Lewiston.
Sydney Jacobson, a vocalist from Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, received the top scholarship of $1,500. In the vocal category, the runner-up was Maya Conklin from Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Idaho, who was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for her performance.
In the instrumental division, bassist Erin Kim from Semiahmoo Secondary School in Surrey, British Columbia, claimed the top prize of $1,500. The instrumental runner-up was pianist Corlan Costello from Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Washington, who earned a $1,000 scholarship.
The scholarships provided by the Avista Foundation can be used towards any major at the University of Idaho. Vanessa Sielert, an education advisor at the festival, commented on the foundation’s commitment, stating, “The Avista Foundation generously offers two scholarships to University of Idaho for each evening of high school competition.” She highlighted the tradition this support has created, enhancing the festival’s allure with performances by students on the main stage on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, which took place from April 17-20 at the ICCU Arena, saw a large turnout with thousands of students and community members in attendance. The event featured notable headlining artists such as Kenny Garrett with Sounds from the Ancestors, Veronica Swift, The Lionel Hampton Big Band, Jovino Santos Neto, and Samir LanGus. Additionally, the festival included educational clinics and workshops led by prominent clinicians and music educators from across the country.
Since 2017, the Avista Foundation has annually awarded scholarships at the University of Idaho to the top high school vocal and instrumental soloists participating in the festival, fostering the development of young musical talent and encouraging their academic and artistic pursuits at the university.
