Scholarships worth upwards of €400,000 have been awarded to University of Limerick students for the current academic year.
Benefactors of the UL Foundation who supported scholarships and bursaries for UL students over the past year were invited to a special award ceremony on campus, organised by the University.
At the event, which was attended by 130 guests and hosted by Interim Provost and Deputy President Professor Ann Ledwith, scholarship recipients were presented with their awards and had an opportunity to meet the generous companies and individuals supporting their educational journey.
Thanks to donor support, the UL Foundation has funded 125 scholarships and awards for UL students this academic year, totalling €400,000.
Speaking at the event, which was attended by UL Chancellor Professor Brigid Laffan and founding UL President Dr Ed Walsh, plus a host of donors, Professor Ledwith hailed the student receiving scholarships as “our future ambassadors, and the best advocates for UL and indeed for Limerick and the Mid-West region.
“Many of the donors of the scholarships we are presenting today began as students here in UL. They started in UL with only an idea of what the university experience might be like, and now all over the world, there is a family of UL graduates, our Alumni, who are connected by a shared and deeply formative experience of learning and growing.
“Scholarships and philanthropic support are hugely important to and valued at University of Limerick. We need to celebrate and encourage this.
“At University of Limerick, we have an amazing and vibrant student community made up of raw talent, immense creativity, a huge variety of skills, and sport excellence – some of whom will join me here to receive their awards.
“Supporting our students through additional scholarships, will allow UL to advance the next wave of our graduates to be the best they can in representing our university, our region, and our country at the highest levels.
“I want to offer my thanks to our supporters, continued success to our students, and congratulations to all for having the resilience and the belief to drive in this great university forward,” Professor Ledwith concluded.
