Unlock a Global Internship Opportunity at the IMF
Every summer, the IMF’s Fund Internship Program (FIP) opens doors for talented students around the world to immerse themselves in international economic policy work, sharpen their research skills, and build professional networks within one of the most influential global institutions. The program, headquartered in Washington, D.C., invites about 50 interns annually to participate in a paid 10- to 12-week internship between June and October. IMF
What you will do
As an intern, you’ll be paired with an experienced IMF staff member and asked to work on a meaningful research question or policy issue impacting member countries. Your work could involve modelling inflation dynamics, assessing the economic impact of digitalisation, exploring financial regulation or corruption trends, or contributing to legal analysis of capital controls. In some cases, the findings are presented internally — and even published. IMF
Who should apply
Ideal candidates for the economic internship track are currently enrolled students focusing on topics such as monetary/international economics, public finance, and financial markets. You need strong quantitative and analytical skills, and excellent command of written and spoken English. Applicants must still be enrolled (i.e., returning to studies after the internship), and be under 32 years old at the start of the internship. IMF
If applying for the Legal Department track, you should have completed, or be within one to two years of completing, an LL.M., J.D., or equivalent advanced law degree — and likewise be under 32. IMF
Benefits & Logistics
Interns receive a competitive salary, round-trip restricted economy travel from their university to Washington, D.C., and limited medical insurance coverage. For non-U.S. citizens, the IMF will provide the paperwork necessary to secure a G4 visa (for those studying in the U.S. with F-1 status, other authorisations such as CPT may apply). Accommodation is not provided — interns must arrange their own housing. IMF
Duration is fixed at a minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks; the internship cannot be extended. While the internship itself is not a guaranteed pathway to a full-time IMF position, it does provide visibility within the institution’s hiring network and offers a valuable stepping stone toward future opportunities.
