The memory of former Record-Courier Editor Guy Clifton has been honored by the establishment of a memorial scholarship endowment to help future University of Nevada, Reno, students seek careers in journalism.
The Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism announced the scholarship ahead of next weekend’s winter commencement. Clifton was a 1986 graduate and served as editor of the UNR publication the Sagebrush.
Clifton was editor of the newspaper from 1989 to 1990. After leaving The R-C he spent 22 years at the Reno Gazette-Journal.
He was named to the Nevada Journalism Hall of Fame after his Sept. 7 death at age 62.
Douglas High School 2021 Valedictorian Gavin Casper is one of more than two dozen Douglas County residents receiving a degree during commencement at the University of Nevada, Reno, on Dec. 7.
The second team offensive tackle in the All-Sierra League pursued his interest in computer science.
Presidential Scholar and 2018 Douglas High School graduate Olivia Tahti is graduating. The Gardnerville resident won the Madani-Gordaninejad Speech Competition in 2021.
August and December graduates will be celebrated at commencement.
The University’s two ceremonies are 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will confer 1,767 degrees and certificates, including 1,170 bachelor’s degrees and 597 advanced degrees (master’s and doctoral degrees).
The morning ceremony will include graduates from the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources; College of Engineering; Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism; School of Medicine; School of Public Health; College of Science; and School of Social Work.
The afternoon ceremony will include graduates from the College of Business; College of Education & Human Development; College of Liberal Arts; and Orvis School of Nursing.
A livestream of the event at unr.edu/live will be available once the ceremony begins.
