The conditions under which students in Ukraine are studying are very difficult. Many are working online, and students have to grapple with the realities of war: bombings, safety protocols, funerals, parents at the front, family members and friends killed or missing, and other atrocities and outcomes of war.
Amid these struggles, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) Scholarship Sponsorship Program is working to provide these students with support.
The UNWLA Scholarship Sponsorship Program has been in existence since 1967. The program has helped hundreds of students become professionals and productive members of their communities in Brazil, Argentina, Poland and other countries, and as of 1993 in Ukraine. Currently, the primary focus of the program is to help students in Ukraine.
Through the generosity of sponsors and donors, in the 2023-2024 school year the UNWLA scholarship program helped 379 students throughout Ukraine, delivering $80,100 in stipends to students for expenses associated with their education.
The UNWLA scholarship program matches students with sponsors. Annual sponsorships range from $100 to $500 and are based on the level of study. Individuals who would like to be sponsors can send $110 for students in grades 1-8, $220 for students in grades 9-12, $330 for students enrolled in universities, $400 for master’s degree students, and $500 for students in doctoral programs. Most of the stipends distributed fall in the first three categories.
As Russia continues its brutal war on Ukraine, it is imperative that as many students as possible in Ukraine get the help they need. It is anticipated that there will be a significant increase in the number of scholarship recipients for the 2024-2025 school year, and UNWLA officials said they are appealing to people of good for help. They asked individuals to consider becoming sponsors or donors.
Individuals interested in becoming a sponsor and/or donating may send a check, payable to UNWLA, to UNWLA Scholarship, PO Box 24, Matawan, N.J., 07747. Individuals can also donate online at www.UNWLA.org by clicking the donate button and selecting “Scholarship Sponsorship Program” in the campaign drop-down menu.
