Members of the Ama-Kanasta Garden Club help maintain the Mill Village Community Garden.
Since 1967, the Ama-Kanasta Garden Club has put money and sweat equity into community projects, including the annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival. For 16 years, flower lovers from all over the southeast came to Douglasville to tour gardens and enjoy the flower show and table settings at the Old Douglas County Courthouse & Museum. The show won several state and national awards.
Other community projects include a butterfly garden at the Cultural Arts Center, flower planting in downtown Douglasville, maintenance of the Mill Village Community Garden, and many more.
The bulk of Ama-Kanasta’s financial resources go to scholarships for Georgia students who are majoring in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field. The club has donated over $19,000 in scholarships over the last 15 years. Since 2011, the club has sponsored a $1,000 annual scholarship that is awarded through the Garden Club of Georgia. This year’s recipient was a young lady majoring in plant sciences and large animal veterinary studies at the University of Georgia.
To fund scholarships and community projects, the Ama-Kanasta Garden Club is hosting a fashion show on April 17. “Petals & Poses” will kick off at 11:30 at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton. Guests will enjoy a fun peek at the latest spring fashions from Dillard’s, a delicious lunch, and an opportunity to win door prizes and bid on luxury items.
“We’ve had a lot of support and success with our fashion shows in the past,” said club president Nell Boggs. “This is our first show since 2019, and we are excited to bring this fun event back to the community and raise money for a worthy cause.”
Tickets to “Petals & Poses” are $60 and can be purchased from any Ama-Kanasta member. For more information on ticket sales and sponsorship opportunities, email amakanastagc@gmail.com.
