KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee will continue its commitment to support its veteran community after receiving a donation from John Grubb, a 1970 alumnus, and his wife, Debbie.
According to UT, the donation will provide additional scholarships, enhance research and instructional support and expand public service opportunities.
The John and Debbie Grubb Veteran Success Center Coach Fund, Veteran Scholarship and Awards Fund and Veteran Success Center Program Fund will promote participation in veteran-focused programs, support student veterans in STEM and hire additional staff, expanding its resources.
“As an Air Force veteran, John knows firsthand the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve,” Tom Cruise, director of the Veterans Success Center and an Air Force veteran, said. “Through this generous gift, John and Debbie Grubb are investing in the success of our student veterans, ensuring they have the resources needed to excel at UT and beyond.”
From Unicoi County, Grubb earned his degree in electrical engineering from UT’s Tickle College of Engineering. He knows firsthand how financial support is essential for returning veterans, especially those with families, because his educational efforts were hindered by limited financial assistance.
“It just makes good sense, for anyone, to give to those who have volunteered and sacrificed in military service,” the Grubbs said in a joint statement. “It is our hope these veteran scholarships will help them achieve ‘above and beyond’ their dreams.”
The Grubbs’ support reaches beyond UT, impacting engineering, scholarships and athletics. This fund will encourage student veterans to maintain focus in the classroom, UT said.
“John and Debbie Grubb are a testament to resilience, to the power of opportunity, to the enduring spirit of a Volunteer,” Amber Williams, vice provost for student success, said. “Their generosity is not just a gift; it’s a beacon of hope, a powerful reminder of what’s possible. They are empowering veterans to become leaders, innovators and changemakers.”
