The University of Texas at El Paso, which was founded in 1913 as the State School of Mines and Metallurgy, plans to award nearly $3 million in scholarships annually for students in its new bachelor’s in mining engineering program, set to launch in fall 2027. The program, which would be the only one of its kind in Texas, the university says, has received $20 million in startup funds from the Texas Legislature and an additional $27 million in prior contributions from the UT System Board of Regents and Freeport-McMoRan. The scholarships will be awarded annually once the program reaches capacity. The last time UTEP offered a mining engineering degree was in 1964.
