Vail Mountain School has announced that Alexa Castillo Martinez was selected as the recipient of the Taft Conlin Scholarship for the incoming freshman class of 2025-2026. Alexa, an eighth-grade student at Berry Creek Middle School, demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement throughout the competitive selection process. She will receive a full scholarship to attend Vail Mountain School through graduation.
Established in 2014, the Taft Conlin Scholarship honors the legacy of the Vail Mountain School student whose life was tragically cut short in an avalanche. The scholarship is awarded to incoming upper school students who exemplify academic excellence, strong character and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.
“We had many exceptional candidates for the Taft Conlin Scholarship this year, so making a decision on just one was especially challenging. Alexa submitted an excellent application with many letters of support,” said Maggie Pavlik, Vail Mountain School’s director of upper school. “During her interview, Alexa sparkled with determination and positivity, proving to the committee that she is a student who already values the idea of community, and prioritizes making the right choices, even when no one is looking. Alexa drew on past experiences to show us how she has overcome adversity and how she is a dedicated learner. We’re eager for her to be part of our 9th grade class in August of 2025.”
Alexa’s educators and mentors have lauded her dedication, perseverance, and kindness.
“She consistently works hard in class, setting goals for improvement and completing independent work to achieve her goals,” said Nanci Almonte, language arts teacher and track coach at Berry Creek Middle School. “She asks for help when needed and takes feedback well, working on revisions both in and out of class to demonstrate mastery. Alexa is not only a respectful student and athlete but also a fun and caring friend.”
“Alexa is a natural leader, consistently taking initiative both in the classroom and beyond, especially during sports. Her ability to communicate clearly and empathetically has made her a respected figure among peers,” said Amy Vanwel, principal of Berry Creek Middle School. “She is always willing to lend a hand, and her positive attitude fosters an environment of collaboration and mutual respect.”
Reflecting on her journey, Alexa shared, “My obstacles have made me the person I am today and have taught me that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. These challenges have taught me that I am responsible for my own success.”
In addition to the merit-based scholarship, Vail Mountain School has recently awarded the Imperi Scholarship to one student for the next four years and multiple Mountain Local Scholarships for the duration of their time in their current division, reinforcing its commitment to making a Vail Mountain School education accessible to families across the community.
