Recent Perquimans High graduates Arianna VanGelder and Halee Mills are the first recipients of $1,000 scholarships each from sponsor Pamela S. Hadden. The scholarships honor firefighters, EMTs and other first responders.
VanGelder graduated with a 4.2 GPA and is enrolled at Meredith College to study criminal justice. She served as an intern at Perquimans Emergency Medical Services in January. Each morning before school, she attended 3 hours of training and earned a certificate for basic EMT. The class was held in partnership with College of The Albemarle. VanGelder volunteered at EMS through the Ride Along Program and assisted medics on call.
Mills graduated with a 4.4 GPA and attends UNC-Wilmington, where she studies nursing. Her ultimate goal is to serve underserved communities.
“I strongly believe that access to quality medical care is a fundamental human right, and I aspire to work in settings where I can serve those who lack adequate healthcare,” said Mills. “By volunteering at free clinics and advocating for healthcare policies that address disparities, I hope to make a tangible impact.”
Hadden worked in emergency services for decades and knows first-hand the sacrifices made by local emergency management services volunteers.
First priority for the scholarship was given to students who currently volunteer in emergency management, have taken course work or are certified in first-aid or CPR. Hadden also lists as a preference that the award go to students pursuing a college degree or career that is service- or emergency-oriented.
