VERONA — Fred “Fritz” Scherz, Jr., councilman on the Verona Town Board, has again created the Fred Scherz Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service.
The 15th annual scholarship will be for $250 and will be awarded to a Town of Verona student who is on track to graduate from 12th grade at a public or private high school or home school by June 30. The student must also have lived in the Town of Verona since at least Dec. 1, 2023, and must be voluntarily engaged in community service or must have created a community project that benefits the Town of Verona.
“Since I did the inaugural scholarship back in the spring of 2010 as a way to honor my Dad’s memory, it’s been exciting to see all the great volunteer efforts the winners of the scholarship have been doing,” said Scherz. “My Dad, Fred Scherz Sr., believed it was important to give back to his community, and he took pride in helping people.”
Last year, for the third time since Scherz started awarding the scholarship, no student won because no students applied. As with past scholarships he awarded, Scherz said he plans on self-funding this year’s scholarship in his dad’s name.
“I feel strongly that volunteerism is a great thing for any community,” he said.

The deadline to apply is June 17.
