TRI-COUNTY — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has officially launched its 79th Annual Youth Scholarship Contests, offering middle and high school students across the nation a chance to win substantial scholarship awards for their patriotic expressions through writing and speech.
This year’s programs include the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest for high school students (grades 9-12), and the Patriot’s Pen written essay contest for middle school students (grades 6-8).
Together, these programs will distribute nearly $2.4 million in scholarships and awards nationwide.
The Voice of Democracy competition encourages students to submit a 3-5 minute recorded audio essay based on the 2025-2026 theme: “How are you showing patriotism and support for our country?”
Students are judged on originality, content, and delivery. The top national prize is a $35,000 scholarship, with additional awards available at the state and local levels.
Geared toward younger students in grades 6-8, the Patriot’s Pen contest invites participants to submit a 300-400 word written essay based on the same theme.
The top national prize is a $5,000 award, with other scholarships and recognitions awarded at post, district, and state levels.
All submissions are due by October 31, 2025, with entries submitted digitally through ScholarsApp.com.
Teachers, youth leaders, and parents are encouraged to help students connect with a local VFW Post for Guidance. Local contacts available for assistance are William Kendall at 704-813-3944, and Daphany Prewitt at 865-888-7172.
