The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post and Auxiliary are once again opening doors for students across all grade levels with the kick-off of their annual scholarships and contests. From kindergarten through high school, students will have the chance to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes in a variety of patriotic-themed programs.
High school students (grades 9–12) can participate in the VFW Voice of Democracy, an audio-essay competition that draws nearly 25,000 participants nationwide each year. This program offers more than $2 million in educational scholarships, including a top national prize of $35,000.
Middle school students (grades 6–8) are encouraged to enter the Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for their chance at state and national awards totaling more than $1.4 million, with a national first-place prize of $5,000.
Young artists have opportunities as well through the VFW Auxiliary Young American Patriotic Art Contest and the 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest, both of which allow students to compete at the local, state, and national levels for scholarships up to $15,000 and $2,500, respectively.
Elementary and middle school students (K–8) may also showcase their creativity in Illustrating America, a patriotic art contest with grade-based divisions and VISA gift card prizes.
