The Vince Wojnar Memorial Scholarship, now in its seventh year, continues its mission of honoring District 2 student-athletes in cross country and track and field. For 2025, Annika Von Ahnen of Mid Valley and Casimir Glaude of Wyoming Valley West were each awarded a $500 scholarship in recognition of their athletic and academic accomplishments.
The scholarship fund was established in memory of Vince Wojnar, a beloved local running figure and co-founder of the Wyoming Valley Striders. A dedicated teacher and coach, Wojnar passed away in 2018. His family and friends created the scholarship to carry forward his legacy by supporting student-athletes who embody his values of excellence and determination.
Von Ahnen placed second at the 2024 District 2 Class 2A Cross Country Championships. In 2025, she was crowned District 2 Class 2A champion in the 3200-meter run, placed third in the 4×800-meter relay, and finished sixth in the 1600-meter run at the Track and Field Championships.
Von Ahnen plans to attend PennWest Edinboro, where she will major in exercise science and continue her running career on the cross country and track teams.
Casimir Glaude’s cross country career was halted this past year, but despite a difficult recovery, he made quite the comeback and returned to compete in track. At the District 2 Class 3A Track and Field Championships, he placed 10th in the 4×800-meter relay, 11th in the 800-meter run, 14th in the 4×400-meter relay, and 15th in the 400-meter dash.
Glaude will attend King’s College, where he will major in nursing and continue his running career on the cross country and track teams.
Both recipients were recently honored and presented with commemorative plaques from the Wojnar family.
The Vince Wojnar Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to one male and one female college-bound student-athlete from District 2 who demonstrates Vince’s commitment to both athletic and academic achievement. The scholarship is administered by The Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains.
