Two Tri-Citians are the first to receive a new scholarship to enable their participation in this year’s Ironman 70.3 triathlon in September.
Michael McKinney and Maricela Vargas will receive benefits valued at $9,000 to help them prepare and compete in the race, which includes a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run, according to a release.
Called the IM TRI Scholarship Program, the scholarships were awarded by Visit Tri-Cities, with benefits provided by local businesses.
“These scholarships represent our commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering personal growth and opportunity through endurance sports,” said Kevin Lewis, president and CEO of Visit Tri-Cities, in a statement. “By removing obstacles to participation, the IM TRI program gives individuals resources and training that will help them overcome adversity and, in the process transform their lives.”
McKinney is the owner of Riverside Collision in Kennewick and a former competitive car and dirt bike rider.
Vargas is a school transition counselor with the state Department of Social & Health Services, serving Kennewick School District high schools and Delta High School.
