“Patrick was one of several area applicants this year. He had a highly competitive submission and he impressed the judges on our grading panel with his academic achievements, volunteer work and strong focus in his chosen field of study,” said Walla Walla Valley Director for the Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation of Washington Dutch Meier.
“His selection reflects highly on his commitment to excellence, and our organization was pleased to be able to help him work to achieve his goals and aspirations,” Meier said.
Kelley and Jeremy Hubbard attended the Masonic presentation ceremony for their son. Meier said the Hubbards have been members of the Walla Walla Public Schools team.
Immediately after the presentation, members surprised Patrick with a happy birthday cupcake and song.
Patrick is studying aviation management and training to become a professional pilot. He has signed a letter of commitment and will join Horizon Airlines upon graduation and completion of pilot training.
“To say that receiving the Scottish Rite Foundation scholarship is exciting would be a severe understatement,” Patrick said during the meeting.
“I was preparing for one of my classes when I first found out about being a recipient of this scholarship. It made the rest of my day, week and school year.
“Most of this excitement is due to my family history in the Masonic Lodge,” he said.
His grandfather was a Freemason and Past Master of the Lodge in Dayton. His father grew up around the Lodge.
“I think he would have been proud to see how his fraternity continues to embrace its commitments to community and country through programs like the Scottish Rite Scholarships.”
“This scholarship will be a great help to me as I pursue my education. These funds are going to be directly applied to the extra expenses that are incurred by the career path that I have chosen,” Patrick said.
He said the four-year professional pilot degree requires flight labs and other costs. His aviation management major and business management minor incur more expenses as he expands his education.
“This scholarship, as well as the potential for renewal in next year’s cycle, will assist both my family and me in covering these added costs,” he said.
Patrick learned about the foundation scholarship through word of mouth after attending a Walla Walla church service.
That’s when Paul Schneidmiller, a local Masonic Lodge member and foundation board member emeritus, spoke with Patrick about the foundation and the application process. Patrick applied right away.
The nonprofit Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation of Washington was established to assist highly-competitive students to achieve their educational goals while attending accredited four-year colleges and universities in the state, according to Foundation President Mark Quenneville.
