The Waxahachie Symphony Association has announced the 2024 winners of its annual Young Artists Awards. This year’s winners were from Waxahachie High School and Midlothian Heritage High School.
“The WSA Young Artist Competition offers Ellis County’s young musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents, compete for scholarships, and perform as soloists at a WSA performance,” said Melissa Chapman, WSA president. “One of the Waxahachie Symphony Association’s core missions is to motivate, encourage, and enhance the musical careers of outstanding young musicians in our community.”
Ann Montgomery, WSA scholarship chair, announced the winners at the WSA concert on March 2.
Each year, the WSA awards scholarships to outstanding Ellis County seniors in instrumental and vocal categories. This year’s first-place winners were French horn player Owen Bartosh from Waxahachie High School and singer Kaci Endsley from Midlothian Heritage High School. Following the announcement and introduction of the students, the audience was treated to performances by the winners.
The winner of the instrumental category, Owen Bartosh, gave a beautiful performance of “Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. II,” by Richard Straus. Bartosh has performed in the marching band and wind ensemble. He is a four-year Texas All-State Band player, drum major, 2022 marching show soloist, 2023 marching show featured soloist, 2023 Waxahachie ISD solo contest grand champion, TMEA All-State Philharmonic, TMEA All-State Symphonic Band, and TMEA All-State Orchestra second overall ranking in 2024. Bartosh is the winner of the Rebecca Boyce Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest and valedictorian of his graduating class. He plans to pursue a degree in economics and public policy at Southern Methodist University. He is the son of Michelle and Cliff Bartosh.
Vocal winner Kaci Endsley impressed the audience with her performance of “Ridente La Calma” by Mozart. She was fifth chair first soprano all-region choir in the 10th grade, and state UIL solo qualifier in the 10th and 11th grades. She serves on the Student Choir Council and helps make creative and leadership decisions for the choir. She is also active in theater and one-act play. In addition to choir, she portrayed lead roles in many theatrical plans including “Wizard of Oz,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Big Fish.” After graduation, she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre. She is the daughter of Jennifer Endsley.
The WSA awarded $1,500 to each of the first-place winners, and $1,000 each to the second-place winners, Katlyn Welborn and Cidney Velazquez.
Saxophone player Katlyn Welborn is a senior at Waxahachie High School. She participated in jazz band for three years and concert band for four years. She earned all-region and area honors and a spot on the all-state roster. Welborn plans to attend Stephen F. Austin University and major in saxophone performance. She is the daughter of Kathleen and Henry Welborn.
Vocalist Cidney Velazquez is also a senior at Waxahachie High School. She participated in musical theatre for four years and choir for two years. Additionally, she was a Cherokee Charmer for three years and a national qualifier twice for solo singing for the International Thespians Festival. After graduating, she plans to attend college to pursue musical theatre and continue her career in performing. She is the daughter of Cassandra Ortiz.
