Two high school graduates from Waynesboro and Augusta County are the recipients of individual $5,000 scholarships to continue their education from the Hershey Company in partnership with the William F. Dearden Foundation.

Gwynn Johnson, a Fort Defiance High School graduate, will study welding at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Haley Thorpe, a Waynesboro High School graduate, will study education at Bridgewater College. The scholarship money will assist the two students with college books, fees, transportation, and other living expenses.
Mike Sever, Stuarts Draft plant manager for Hershey, said, “We are thrilled to announce the selection of these remarkable students for the 2024 Bearden Scholarship. The Hershey company has a rich history of providing opportunities for youth, and we see this as another way to support young people in their educational pursuits.”

The Dearden Scholarship was introduced in 2023 in the communities surrounding Hershey’s Stuarts Draft plant. The joint scholarship recognizes the distinguished alumnus of the Milton Hershey School, William F. Dearden. He served as board chairman of the Hershey Company and oversaw the construction of the Stuarts Draft Hershey plant. The plant opened more than four decades ago.
