In 2025, the family of Steven Slaughter established the Steven Keith Slaughter Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory and legacy of someone who believed in helping others.
Steven Keith “Steve” Slaughter was born on June 18, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, to James David Slaughter, Sr. and Carrie Bell Chevis Slaughter. Steve was raised in Oakman by his uncle and aunt, Desabee Curtis, Jr. and Augusta Curtis, whom he loved dearly.
Steve attended Oakman High School and graduated in the class of 1984. He was a member of the notorious 1984 Oakman High School 1A State Championship Baseball Team, the only baseball state championship in school history. During his time on the team, his teammates gave him the nickname “Mantel” for his ability to play defense similar to New York Yankees legend, Micky Mantle. He and his teammates were inducted into the Walker County Sports Hall of Fame in August 2021 for this achievement.
Steve was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving four years in the Electrical and Installation Squadron for which he received an Honorable Discharge. He was skilled in the areas of HVAC, electricity, and was a proficient locksmith. Steve was also a founding member of the NBL Motorcycle Club of Jasper.
Steve departed this life on March 3, 2024, in Jasper. He leaves behind his wife, Dr. Mary Slaughter, and two sons, USAFA 2nd Lieutenant Mayson Slaughter and Keenan (KJ) Slaughter.
The Steven Keith Slaughter Memorial Scholarship will be focused on students who are high school athletes (baseball/softball), maintain good grades, and have financial need. They may be pursuing an academic degree or a career technical education field with a focus on HVAC and electrical technology at Bevill State Community College.
We are honored to host this memorial scholarship and look forward to seeing the impact it makes on future scholars!
