Warren Central High School track star Jonathan Henderson secured his athletic future on Tuesday as he signed with the University of South Alabama. Cameron Eaddy also solidified his future by signing with Hinds Community College.
Henderson:
Henderson first began running track in the ninth grade as he competed in the high jump and the 400. By his sophomore year, Henderson quickly realized that the high jump would be where he would shine the most.
Heading into his junior year, Henderson put in major work and would soon prepare for a breakout season.
“I was in the gym every morning at 5:30 and I was blessed to have natural athleticism,” Henderson said.
At the JPS Invitational in 2023, Henderson made headlines when he was ranked No. 1 in the nation after leaping 6’10.
“It was a weird feeling because the whole school and city knew my name but I knew I couldn’t enjoy it too much because cockiness gets you nowhere,” Henderson added.
Jonathan eventually won a state title later that year after coming up short just a year prior.
“It really didn’t hit me until I got in the car but it was definitely unreal and there’s nothing I can compare it to,” he said.
Just a year later as a senior, Henderson started the year off right as he secured blue ribbons in the JPS, Brookhaven, and the WC Invitationals. His final season was cut short after Regionals when he didn’t place to advance to North State.
“I had a lot of cockiness about me and I let God get out of my life in places that he shouldn’t have been out of but I look at it as a lesson now,” he said.
Now that high school track is behind him, Henderson has his mind set on competing at the next level as he chose South Alabama over Jackson State, Southern Mississippi, Indiana Tech, and Hinds CC.
Wilson is coached by Corey Wilson Sr. who he mentioned had a big influence in his track career.
“He pushed me a lot and gave me the confidence that I needed to keep going,” Henderson added.
Henderson will soon be competing on the next level and his support system for sticking with him along the way.
Jonathan is the son of Roderick and Vickie Henderson.
Eaddy
Cameron Eaddy decided to take his talents to Hinds Community College and plans to compete in the 100 and 200.
Eaddy began his track career just four months ago where he made a definite impact on the Vikings’ program. He made it all the way to the state in his first year where he stood out among veteran track athletes.
“I felt like I did I did great but I’m going to continue to run this summer and get to where I want to be,” Eaddy said.
Cameron ran the 4x100m relay at State along with Landon Green, Zack Evans, and Dwight Palmer Jr. where they came in fourth place.
Although he began running track just a short time ago, Eaddy found peace in training and competing.
“I just like to run and it helps get my mind off things,” Eaddy added.
Like Henderson, Eaddy was coached by Wilson who he testified helped him become an athlete.
“He was a great influence and he helped me get to where I am,” he said.
Eaddy also mentioned that Alexander Burrell played a huge role in his success. He will soon be competing on the collegiate level as he is all set to attend Hinds CC.
“I’m just grateful for the opportunity to extend my track career,” he added.
