Time is running out for Birmingham students to apply for a specific college scholarship.
The Birmingham Promise helps cover the financial cost for students to attend any public two or four-year college in Alabama. Tuition costs, mandatory fees and student success coaching will be covered for eight consecutive semesters.
This program is in its sixth year. The executive director, Samantha Williams, said more families are taking advantage of this cost-saving opportunity. At least 400-500 applications have been submitted so far.
Before applying to the Birmingham Promise, students must complete the Federal Student Aid application, which determines their financial award through the U.S. government. Once that is done, you can then proceed with the promise.
“Because of how tightly we work with the colleges and institutions, we really cannot take applications after the deadline. We are going through the list, making sure we are able to tell institutions how many young people to expect,” Williams said.
The deadline to submit an application is May 1. Students should have received a link to the application through their Microsoft Outlook student email account.
