The West Hazleton Lions Club presented two area graduating Seniors with the Gary Foose Memorial Scholarship during an awards dinner held at Eli’s in West Hazleton.
The recipients were judged by essays submitted in response to the questions: “What do youenjoy about living in the Hazleton Area, and how would you ‘pay it forward’ to provide opportunity to future graduates?
The winning students were awarded $500 cash scholarships.
Kendall Orozco is the daughter of Christopher Orozco and Tricia Eyerly of North Union Township. Kendall is a graduate of MMI and will be attending the University of Florida in the fall to study civil engineering.
Brady Znachko, the son of Brian and Mary Ellen Znachko, resides in Hazle Township. Heis a graduate of Hazleton Area High School and will be attending the honors program atVillanova University, majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in aerospaceengineering.
The Gary Foose Memorial Scholarship was established to recognize the achievements of students from West Hazleton and Conyngham boroughs and Banks, North Union, Sugarloaf, Black Creek, and Hazle townships who would have graduated from the former West Hazleton High School. Foose, who was a longtime teacher at West Hazleton High School, was the driving force in establishing the scholarship, and since its inception over thirty years ago, more than $80,000 has been awarded.
The Scholarship fund is managed by the West Hazleton Lions Charities Inc., a 501c3 corporation. All donations made to the fund are greatly appreciated and are fully tax-deductible.
