Leem’s scholarship award was the National Merit Scholarship, which offers nearly 7,000 students around the country a scholarship from a $26 million pool.
Nearly 94 different businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations contribute to the National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards around 770 scholarships to deserving students like Leem each year.
The National Merit Scholarship winners are not chosen lightly. They are selected based on their exceptional academic performance, extracurricular activities, and ability to thrive in the challenging academic environment of a four-year university. This rigorous selection process underscores the scholarship’s value and prestige.
Companies that see the value in investing in the education of our country’s brightest minds fund the Merit Scholarships. With over $870 million spent or committed for National Merit Scholarships, sponsors from the business community have contributed to 69 scholarship opportunities available. These sponsors come from almost every industry in the United States.
After taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 2022, the program’s first screening test, high school juniors were eligible to participate in the 2024 Merit Scholarship competition. Over 16,000 semifinalists were announced last fall on a state-representational basis, with the exact number proportional to the percentage of high school seniors from each state. Although they made up less than 1% of the graduating class, semifinalists were the top scorers from each state’s program.
To advance to the finalist level of the National Merit Scholarship competition, semifinalists were required to submit extensive information and meet all requirements. The following criteria were met by all of the finalists: an exceptional academic record, principal endorsement and recommendation, qualifying test scores (SAT or ACT), essay writing and leadership experience details.
More than 15,000 students from the semifinalist group have made it to the finalist stage, and approximately 50% of those students will win Merit Scholarships by the end of the 2024 competition.
