Rocky River High School boasts three National Merit Semifinalists and seven Commended Scholars.Rocky River City Schools
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio — High schools from around the country celebrated the announcement of the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists and Commended Scholars this month.
Semifinalists are chosen based on their 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) scores.
More than 1.3 million students took the test, with only 16,000 nationwide being selected as Semifinalists — representing 1 percent of seniors nationwide — in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for nearly 7,000 scholarships worth nearly $26 million, which will be awarded next spring.
Although Commended Scholars will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some may be candidates for Special Scholarships offered by corporate sponsors.
At Bay Village High School, Jacob Dwyer was named a Semifinalist. He is a member of the tennis team, National Honor Society, Key Club, International Thespian Society, marching band (playing center snare) and jazz band.
“We are so proud of Jacob Dwyer and all that he has accomplished during his years at Bay High and within our greater community,” Jason Martin, Bay High School principal, said in the press release.
Rocky River High School boasts three Semifinalists and seven Commended Scholars.
National Merit semifinalists include seniors Colin Alber, Brynn Bennett and Beatrix Stickney.
Seniors Keira Kishna, Thomas Malquest, Ryan Nazette, Robert Roe, Julia Schmid, Michael Swallow and Vincent Valente have been recognized as Commended Scholars.
At Westlake High School, seven students qualified as National Merit Semifinalists and eight students from the Class of 2025 qualified as Commended Scholars (not all of the names could be released).
