The Westmoreland County Coaches Association announced its scholarship winners for 2024.
Each year, the WCCA scholarship committee receives and reviews applications from seniors from county high schools and then determine the winners.
Three graduates received $2,000, and five others were awarded $1,500.
The $2,000 winners were:
• Mikaela Shine of Derry received the Nicholas Pecoraro Memorial Scholarship. She is a first-year student at Boston College. Pecoraro was a long-time member and former treasurer of the WCCA.
• Noah Mulac of Norwin received the Robert Van Atta Memorial Scholarship. He attends Notre Dame. Van Atta was a high school historian in Westmoreland County.
• Brean Poole a Northwest Missouri State student from Southmoreland, received the Dr. Larry Sellitto Memorial Scholarship. The late Sellitto was a former WCCA president.
The $1,500 winners were:
• Sidney Campbell (Monessen/Ohio State).
• Ryan Long (Valley/Slippery Rock).
• Hannah Uhrinek (Hempfield/Chatham).
• Gabrielle Feth (Valley/Miami).
• Henry Krom (Latrobe/Catholic University).

WCCA schedule
The next event on the WCCA winter calendar are the girls and boys swimming and diving championships set for Jan. 24-25 at Derry.
Diving begins 5 p.m. Jan. 24, and swimming starts at 10 a.m. Jan. 25.
Last year’s team champions were Franklin Regional (3A boys and girls) and Mt. Pleasant (2A boys and girls).

Recruiting
• Isabella Williams, a softball player at Belle Vernon, will continue her playing career at Division II Charleston.
• Penn-Trafford football player Dom Smith received offers to play at Division II Clarion and Gannon.
• Clarion also offered Colin Bruno, a lineman at Norwin. Bruno also has an offer from Millersville.
• Anthony Scarton, a lineman at Latrobe, grabbed an offer from Gannon.
• Tim Myers, a football defensive end at Latrobe, also has an offer from Clarion.
• Kasey Williams of Hempfield will continue her swimming career at Juniata.
• Greensburg Salem football lineman Cole Savage committed to Grove City, a Division III program in the PAC.
• Greensburg Salem baseball player Peyton Chismar is headed to Westmoreland County Community College.
• Noelle Dougherty of Hempfield will run track and cross country at Mount Union.
